Abstract

In this thesis we report sensitization of lanthanide ions through organic ligands. This is achieved by synthesizing organic ligand capped lanthanide doped CaF₂ nanocrystals by green microwave synthesis route. The synthesized nanocrystals showed moderate water dispersibility enabling their applications in sensing and device fabrication. Incorporation of Ln³⁺ ions in to the CaF₂ host matrix is confirmed by observing their characteristic strong emissions. Hydrophobic organic ligands were made soluble in water using simple chemistry and used as capping agents. An effective sensitization in lanthanide emission was attributed to vicinity of organic ligand (donor) to the lanthanide ion (acceptor) and spectral overlap between organic ligand and lanthanide ion. Organic ligands as surfactant and sensitizer indicate that the nanoparticles have a prospective role in sensing applications.
