Abstract

We investigate how the emergence of ordered motion from disordered motion (flocking) in collectively moving particles can be affected by velocity, systems size(N), cell size (L) and varied perception mechanism (neighbouring interactions) including metric ruling and topological ruling. In case of topological ruling, particles interact with a fixed number of nearest neighbours and for metric ruling, particles interact with only those neighbours which falls within certain metric distance. We observe through investigation of velocity alignment model in open space that for metric ruling, for a given system size(N), there exists a critical value of interaction radius(Rc) and for topological ruling, there exists a critical number of nearest neighbours(Nc), which is required for flocking. For metric ruling, the critical interaction radius (Rc) decreases as system size(N) is increased for given velocity magnitudes whereas increasing velocity magnitudes increases Rc for given N. In case of the topological ruling, if velocities are low, Nc, doesn’t depend on cell size(L), whereas for high velocity, increasing cell size (L) decreases the Nc. We also study the system under periodic boundary conditions and we observe a rather opposite effect of velocity for metric ruling, that is, higher velocity is beneficial in establishing order.
