Abstract

The phenomenon of spatial self-phase modulation (SSPM) of light was observed in a solution of the organic dye Coumarin-153 in ethanol for a Gaussian laser beam. The far-field diffraction patterns showed temporal fluctuations by disappearing and reappearing. The dependence of this phenomenon on power and concentration is reported. The effect of SSPM is studied using the Fresnel- Kirchoff diffraction theory and the analytical solution of the thermal transport equation and is simulated in MATLAB. The effects of convection and conduction on the diffraction ring patterns are also studied. The phenomenon of thermal blooming is studied and is hypothesized to be the reason for the disappearance and reappearance of the rings. The method of holography is proposed to image the bubbles caused due to thermal blooming.
