Abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass has long been recognized as a potential sustainable source of mixed sugars for fermentation to biofuels. But biomass recalcitrance poses as a major problem for enzymatic degradation. A pretreatment step is conducted to reduce recalcitrance by depolymerizing biomass. It has been reported that pretreating biomass with ionic liquids increases enzyme accessibility by decreasing cellulose crystallinity. Ionic liquids have shown their potential as a promising reaction medium, either as such or as an aqueous mixture, for biocatalysis. However, a significant decrease in cellulase activity in the presence of trace amounts of ILs has been also been reported in literature. Here, we are trying to elucidate the effect of ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([C₂mim][OAc]) on the kinetic parameters of cellulose cocktail from Trichoderma viride, substrate used was CMC (carboxy methyl cellulose).
