Abstract

This study demonstrated that the land-use type greatly influenced the SMC and biomass in the Mohanpur region of eastern India. Type of vegetation and other components in the soil profile are primary drivers for the variation of microbial activities. The other significant findings are higher microbial PLFA biomass in grass-dominated as a comparison to other land-use types. All types of PLFAs decreased with the soil depth across all land use types except cropland, which was mainly attributed to increase in the active pool of soil nutrients availability with depth and lower stress condition. Thus, to summarize, this study is able to observe the physical changes of soil concerning PLFAs. PLFA of soil microbial communities have shown its application to understanding microbial ecology and identifies the variation of SMC structure with different land use types.
