Abstract

Shear wave velocity and crustal thickness beneath broad-band seismic stations along INDEPTH III profile in central Tibet region is estimated by joint inversion of Rayleigh wave group velocity and receiver functions. Tibetan Plateau, our area of interest, is a consequence of ongoing Indian-Eurasian continental collision. Indian lower crust is underthrusted beneath Himalaya and underplated beneath southern Tibet, because of the increased thickness of Tibetan crust our preferred method for estimation is Receiver function common conversion point method. The inversion results show that the crustal structure beneath the Tibet region has two distinct discontinuities. Joint inversion results show 0~3 km thick subsurface low shear velocity(Vs 1.5~2.5 km/s) layer followed by 15~35km thick layer of silicic material having an average Vs of about ~3.5km/s. The lower crust and middle crust has 30~40km thick mafic layer with Vs ~4.0km/s. Crustal thickness varies from 60~70 km in Tibet INDEPTH III region.
