Abstract

Sustainability energy along with health care is extremely vital for human survival. The abundance of water makes it extremely viable candidate for sustainable energy economy. Noble metals (Pt) and noble metal oxides (RuO₂ and IrO₂) show the best activity for the HER and OER, respectively, but their large-scale industrial application is hindered by their high cost and stability. Hence, the generation of nonprecious, bi-functional durable catalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) and Oxygen Evolution Reaction(OER) has attracted lot of importance now a days. Moreover, water pollution has been a long decade problem. Here in, we report ZIF-magnetite based composite for arsenic removal and electrochemical water splitting. The first part of this work demonstrates a magnetite incorporated ZIF-8 based composite for arsenic adsorption from aqueous media. The composite showed high stability and good efficiency. The second part of this work focuses on designing a cost effective, non-noble metal bi-functional catalyst for desired electrochemical water splitting. The resultant ZF₂-700 catalyst exhibits excellent HER and OER activity in 1M KOH solution. The catalyst manifests OER and HER activity to be 320 mV and 69 mV at a current density of 10mA/cm² in 1M KOH, respectively, that is pretty impressive. Hence, this catalyst becomes potential candidate for overall water splitting. Here, metallic Fe and Co with graphitic carbon plays critical role on the enhancement of electrochemical activity.
