Abstract

Meandering cutoffs are the most common and distinctive features in the lowland of floodplain. Study of oxbow lakes is very important as they preserve the underlying channel bed forms, it helps in environmental reconstruction, maintains sinuosity of the main channel, important sink for suspended load, and it also enhances topographical and habitat range of flood plain. Fluvial deposits in the oxbow lakes are the archive for river responses to tectonic or climatic change. So, samples from three different oxbow lakes were collected. These samples were studied to check the feasibility of OSL dating technique and along with that an attempt was made to calculate the approximate shifting rate of the Hooghly river. Study of fluvial system of this Bengal basin showed tectonic influence along with climatic control for the avulsion of Hooghly river.
