Abstract

Communication of biochemical information across the bilayer membrane is of great significance, in many biological systems. In nature, communication of chemical signal across the bilayer membrane is carried out with the help of membrane-spanning receptors. The ability to generate such a complex process in the artificial system has many possible applications like drug delivery, sensing etc. Here we have described a mechanism where the chemical signal is transmitted from one side of the bilayer to the other side of the bilayer without any physical exchange of matter. We have reported a membrane-spanning artificial receptor, which responds to binding with Ca²⁺ by undergoing oligomerisation and propagating the same information deep inside the bilayer.
