Abstract

The study ascertained the concentrations, mobility, and general pollution loads of heavy metals in the River Ganga (Hooghly). The heavy metal concentrations of Cr, As, Pb, Co and Cd in waters were higher than their respective maximum permissible limits, but in sediment all observed heavy metals was below to their permissible limits according to WHO standard for natural drinking waters and soil. Water quality parameters assessed were total dissolved salts (TDS), electrical Conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, Alkalinity and heavy metals. Heavy metals such as Cu, Co, Fe, Ni and Zn are essential micronutrients for plants and microorganisms while metals such as Pb, Cr and Cd have no physiological activity and are toxic even if present in trace quantities.
