Abstract

Terraces are not only good indicator of climate change. From ancient time human used terraces for settlement. Scholar worked on its form, nature and stratigraphy to understand and interpret terraces. Stratigraphical , sedimentological and geochemical analysis has been done to infer about paleoclimate. In equilibrium state rivers have smooth concave longitudinal profile. However, the river is sensitive to uplift, climate change and the nature of the bedrocks. By analysis the slope of the river along the longitudinal profile, we can tell about faulting, topographic front and change in bedrock. The paired terraces are associated with episodic uplift and non-paired terraces with continued uplift. Now days due to advancement in the field of science and technology, it is possible to date the terrace remnants. Technique like 14C-dating, 234U and 230Th dating, 18O dating, thermal luminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) is used for assigning the ages. From the height of terraces, the amount of the uplift can be associated since the river abandon its old channel. After calculating the age of the terraces remnants and the elevation difference between the terraces and the position of present day flood plain ,it is possible to calculate the rate of uplift. River terraces are a rich source of evidences of past events and hence have attracted the attention of many scholars from different discipline. In the India-Bhutan territorial region on the river terraces of the Sankosh River no work has been done. It’s a untouched area, the age of the terraces will be assign using the OSL dating.
